This book collates past and current research on one of the most promising emerging modalities for breast cancer detection. Readers will discover how, as a standalone technology or in conjunction with another modality, microwave imaging has the potential to provide reliable, safe and comfortable breast exams at low cost. Current breast imaging modalities include X- ray, Ultrasound, Magnetic Resonance Imaging, and Positron Emission Tomography. Each of these methods suffers from limitations, including poor sensitivity or specificity, high cost, patient discomfort, and exposure to potentially harmful ionising radiation. Microwave breast imaging is based on a contrast in the dielectric properties of breast tissue that exists at microwave frequencies.
The book begins by considering the anatomy and dielectric properties of the breast, contrasting historical and recent studies. Next, radar-based breast imaging algorithms are discussed, encompassing both early-stage artefact removal, and data independent and adaptive beamforming algorithms. In a similar fashion, microwave tomographic reconstruction algorithms are reviewed in the following chapter, introducing the reader to both the fundamental and more advanced algorithms. Apart from imaging, the book also reviews research efforts in extracting clinically useful information from the Radar Target Signature of breast tumours, which is used to classify tumours as either benign or malignant. Finally, the book concludes by describing the current state of the art in terms of prototype microwave breast imaging systems, with a particular emphasis on those which have progressed to the clinical evaluation stage.
This work is motivated by the fact that breast cancer is one of the leading causes of death amongst women in Europe and the US, and the second most common cancer in the world today. Such an important area of research will appeal to many scholars and practitioners.

Medical imaging has experienced significant growth in terms of both methodologies and instrumentation in recent years. It has played a major role in modern medicine for providing important and often essential information for medical diagnosis and treatment as well as preventive healthcare. Since the area is very broad and fast-growing, it is not possible for a single volume to cover every aspect of medical imaging. The book places emphasis only on frontier development in medical imaging with three parts: (1) theory, techniques and physics, (2) image processing, (3) emerging methods and medical imaging systems. Some chapters may belong to more than one of the three parts. The book has a broader coverage of medical imaging than the companion volume ComputerVision in Medical Imaging (hereafter noted as CVMI Book) edited by myself and recently published (Nov. 2013) also by World Scientific Publishing with table of content attached to the Preface.
Medical imaging is indeed a very broad and highly interdisciplinary area that requires collaboration among medical, engineering, physics and computer science professions as demonstrated in this book. Researchers in pattern recognition and computer vision may find that Chapters 7, 8, 10, 14 and 19 to be particularly informative. All chapters provide good introduction of the topic considered and extensive list of reference articles, which are helpful to a broad range of readers.

This book has its origin in the publication of the author’s first book Fuzzy Image Processing and Application with MATLAB. In this book, an introduction to fuzzy set theory is included and different fuzzy techniques are discussed for image processing. Images are considered to be fuzzy for their grey levels or information lost while mapping and so fuzzy set theory is used, which considers uncertainty in the form of the membership function. But medical images contain a lot of uncertainties that are present in the edges/boundaries/ regions. These images are poorly illuminated, and many structures are not clearly visible. So sets that use more uncertainties may be useful for medical image analysis.
Medical image analysis using advanced fuzzy set theoretic techniques is an exciting and dynamic branch of image processing. Since the introduction of fuzzy set theory by Prof. L.A. Zadeh in 1965, there has been an explosion of interest in advanced fuzzy set theories, such as intuitionistic fuzzy set and Type II fuzzy set, that represent the uncertainty in a better way. Fuzzy set theory considers only one uncertainty – the membership function. Prof. L.A. Zadeh proposed Type II fuzzy set theory that considers the fuzzy membership function as fuzzy. Later, Prof. K.T. Atanassov introduced intuitionistic fuzzy set theory that considers hesitation while defining the membership function. With intuitionistic fuzzy set, there has been a growth in image processing applications such as image enhancement, thresholding, clustering, edge detection and morphological image processing, but there is very little work on Type II fuzzy set.
